Hy-Vee is closing its Market Grille restaurants and will transition them into Wahlburgers restaurants by early summer.  That will include the two Market Grille's in the Quad Cities area located in Silvis and Muscatine.

The transition will not effect the Market Grille Express restaurants which already provide a quick serve model.

Hy-Vee has 21 Market Grille locations across five states.

According to the Des Moines Register, Market Grille dining areas will remain open during the transition with a modified menu that includes breakfast, burgers, sandwiches and other specials. Full bar service will remain.

Wahlburgers restaurants will be counter-service, according to the statement.

The Register reports, "Our customers are wanting more fresh and convenient meal options," officials said in the statement.

The move will result in layoffs; Hy-Vee spokesperson Christina Gayman said the company does not know how many people will be affected at this time. She said some employees will be able to transition to other roles in Hy-Vee stores or with Wahlburgers.

Hy-Vee will still offer Market Grille pickup and delivery options through the restaurant's app in the Des Moines metro, Gayman said.

The announcement follows several other changes in the company. Hy-Vee will be reducing store hours in the metro and notified employees at its Urbandale fulfillment center that layoffs are likely in early May.

Wahlburgers restaurants can be found in 18 states with locations in West Des Moines and Chicago. They specialize in hamburgers, fish, chicken and vegetarian sandwiches with housemade condiments.
