We are almost 7 months past since most of the major shutdowns happened across America because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Since March, states have been tasked with implementing their COVID-19 mitigation systems and with living in the Quad Cities, Iowa and Illinois seem to be polar opposites when it comes to having restrictions in place to slow the spread of the Coronavirus.

Our friends at WalletHub have been keeping track of states slowing the spread of the Coronavirus. On St. Patrick's Day of this year, March 17, most states across the countries shut down bars, put strict restrictions on restaurants, and many other activities and businesses where people gather.

We're 7 months in and we have an update on which states have the fewest COVID-19 restrictions to stop the spread of the virus. Illinois and Iowa seem to have two different plans, and as you can tell by the headline of this article, Iowa has much fewer restrictions than many other states.

To find which states have the fewest and most restrictions, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 17 relevant metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the fewest restrictions.

Those metrics include

  1. Requirement to Wear a Face Mask in Public
  2. Travel Restrictions
  3. Large Gatherings Restrictions
  4. Statewide School Restart
  5. Reopening of Restaurants and Bars
  6. State Guidance on Customer Health Checks at Restaurants
  7. Reopening of Non-Essential Businesses
  8. Legislation on Business Immunity from COVID-19 Claims
  9. Working from Home Requirements/Recommendations
  10. Workplace Temperature Screening
  11. Strictness of “Shelter in Place” Order
  12. Enforcement or Penalties for COVID-19 Legislation Non-Compliance
  13. Presence of Mandated Contact Tracing Program
  14. Presence of Multistate Agreements to Reopen
  15. State Court Closure or Suspension
  16. Guidance on Elective Medical Procedures
  17. Guidance for Assisted Living Facilities Related to COVID-19

WalletHub then determined the weighted average across all metrics to calculate an overall score for each state and used the resulting scores to rank the states.

According to WalletHub, Iowa has the 5th fewest COVID-19 restrictions compared to the other states and Washing D.C., and has an overall score of 75.48.

Illinois is ranked 23rd with an overall score of 49.91.
