As I drove to work today I noticed multiple cars on the side of the road, with every snowfall in October all the way to March we see hazardous road conditions and countless accidents causing major delays.

We all have been or know someone who has been in a snow related fender bender, so here are a few quick reminders of how to stay safe on the roads this season.

An obvious one that is usually forgotten is to increase your following distance to five to six seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop. So even if someone is going slow, give them space.

Another big one is if you feel your car beginning to skid, always, look where you want to go—not where the car is heading at that precise moment. Let your peripheral vision take care of whatever you're trying to avoid.

Know your brakes. keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal, and remember that slamming in your breaks in most situations on snow will NOT be helpful.

Also remember not to take light snow for granted, anytime it’s snowing is dangerous. There are many more helpful reminders at AAA. Stay safe out there this season QC
